Abstract

Islamic jurisprudence, or Fiqh, has evolved over fourteen centuries, adapting to various socio-political, cultural, and intellectual transformations across the Muslim world. This paper traces the historical development of Islamic legal thought from its origins in the Qur’an and Sunnah through the classical period of the four Sunni schools of law, the contributions of Shi'a jurisprudence, and the impact of colonialism and modernity. It also explores how contemporary scholars and institutions reconcile traditional jurisprudential frameworks with modern legal systems and human rights discourse. The study argues that while Fiqh remains rooted in divine principles, its interpretive flexibility has allowed it to respond to changing contexts, thus ensuring its continued relevance.
